Tyre age calculator

How old is that tyre?

Rubber ages whether or not the tyre is used. A tyre with plenty of tread can still be too old to trust, and that includes the spare.

Look for “DOT” on the sidewall followed by letters and numbers, often on one side only. The final four digits, usually in an oval, are the week and year of manufacture: 2423 means week 24 of 2023.

Fine

3.3 years old

Made in week 24 of 2023

Under five years old. Keep checking tread depth and look for cracks in the sidewall.

Tyre age questions

How do I know how old my tyres are?

Find the DOT code on the sidewall; it may be on one side only. Its last four digits are the week and year of manufacture, so 2423 means week 24 of 2023. Tyres made before 2000 used three digits.

How old is too old for a tyre?

Most tyre makers recommend a professional inspection every year from five years old and replacement at ten years, whatever the tread depth. Heat, sun and low use age rubber faster, so Australian cars that sit outside may need tyres sooner.

Is it OK to buy tyres that are a year or two old?

Yes. Tyres stored cool and dark in a warehouse age slowly, and stock under two years old is normal. Avoid anything over about three years old when buying new.
